Melissa Shoes launches interactive in-store social hubs to gain customer insights

Brazilian footwear brand Melissa Shoes is launching interactive experiences in two of its US locations in a bid to drive engagement and gain customer insights.

Teaming up with social experiential technology company, M-ND, the retailer will introduce digital displays in both Orlando and Miami, this week. The M-ND Matter displays allow shoppers to explore and share seasonal lookbooks, upload and print branded social media photos, and access special deals, giveaways and loyalty rewards.

“We’re always exploring new innovations that extend the in-store experience to digital channels,” said Michele Levy CEO of Ilhabela Holdings, the exclusive distributor of Melissa Shoes in the US.

“M-ND is unique in that it introduces a new interactive element to the in-store shopping experience – encouraging customers to engage with our digital lookbooks and tell the world about the shoes they love over social media – while simultaneously generating widespread word of mouth. Our goal is to learn from the insights we’ll gain about customer preferences, and put those to use to continually improve our loyal customers’ experiences.”

The aim is to then use that data around in-store customer preferences, social media influence and behaviour (the displays provide the brand with direct access to profile data, based on customer permission). The team suggests that such a steady stream of engagement analytics will help inform current and future business planning around styles. They will also use this data for remarketing.

The initiative is attached to social media otherwise with the hashtag #melissashoesusa and a geotag of the store’s location. By printing any pictures taken, the user gets access to discount coupons and Melissa Shoes tote bags. They also get entered into a contest to win free membership to the exclusive Melissa Plus Club loyalty program for VIP customers, which usually costs $50.

Finery launches discovery game for new season collection

British newcomer brand Finery has launched a digital microsite fronted by a quiz to accompany its first autumn/winter collection.

Created as part of its “In the mood for” campaign, which plays on the idea of duality, the game effectively ties together content and commerce by allowing users to discover their best-suited outerwear for the season.

A series of choices are presented, each one with different images representing items from the design team’s inspirations. Stark, sculptural architecture scenes sit against rich chocolate interiors, for example, with those selected leading through to one of the brand’s coats.

“As an online brand it’s so important for us to create a dialogue with our customers and to engage them in our personality. We chose the coat as the star of the game as our outerwear collection is so diverse and these really are our hero items”, explains brand director Caren Downie, who was formerly at Asos and Topshop.

The launch of the site coincides with a promotional campaign running around London that consists of flyposters featuring graphic images that direct the audience back to the A/W collection. “This shows that whilst it’s important to show the brand physically, the digital home is the flagship and the heart of the brand,” reads a statement from the company.

IN PICTURES: Macy’s new “One Below” juniors floor – a tech-infused playground

Macy’s has opened a new juniors floor on the lower level of its flagship Herald Square location in New York City, with numerous tech features including a selfie wall and Levi’s customisation station installed.

Called One Below, the 53,000 square-foot space is part of a $400m renovation of the store. It features young brands such as Material Girl and XOXO, and a wealth of interactive experiences to engage with today’s young consumers.

The selfie wall allows users to pose against famous Macy’s backdrops; the Levi’s custom laser bar let’s them choose designs from a book to appear on their jeans; a wearable tech area dedicated to smart watches includes brands like Fitbit, Samsung and Fossil; and another from 3D systems sees 3D-printed products including jewellery and phone cases for sale.

A blow dry bar is also coming to the beauty department soon, and there are screens in every department, including a giant one outside the fitting room showing what looks like Instagram posts across it. All the seats for those waiting also have charging stations for devices.

The floor is reportedly aimed at Millennials (those born circa 1980-2000), but it already feels younger than that – for today’s pre-teens and teens (if the prom and homecoming dresses are anything to go by) and their increasingly connected futures.

More importantly, it’s also heavily for today’s teen tourists: it’s no mistake the selfie wall appears in the Macy’s Arcade for instance, which also houses the department store’s souvenir products. This is for visitors, not regular shoppers; it’s intentionally gimmicky, but that’s why it works.

The holiday season is to the retail world what the Super Bowl is to big-name brands. Stores on both sides of the Atlantic are pushing out high profile campaigns in a bid to capture that all-important share of Q4 wallet.

Looking beyond the traditional divide between digital and brick-and-mortar outlets, a handful of interactive tech integrations are driving engagement online and in the store space. These creations draw on gaming, augmented reality, shoppable videos and personalised experiences. Here’s our pick of 10 of the best.

Bloomingdale’s interactive windows

Bloomingdale’s is all about interactive windows this holiday season, with a series of gaming experiences tied to the theme of bows. Shoppers are encouraged to participate by connecting to Bloomingdalesholiday.com via their smartphones. Challenges include a card-turning memory game called Memo-a-Bow; a kind of Space Invaders activity called Whack-a-Bow; and Peek-a-Bow, where users have to keep track of a bow hidden under one of several moving boxes. Created by retail innovation company The Science Project, the site also affords participants the opportunity to take selfies on an interactive touchscreen and share them over Facebook, and see tweets posted using the #bloomiesgreetings hashtag appear across the New York skyline behind the glass.

Target’s & Google’s immersive 3-D adventure

The game is also afoot at Target, where a partnership with Google’s Art, Copy & Code team and creative agency 72andSunny has produced a mobile experience called Bullseye’s Playground. The six games include sledding with Target’s mascot bull terrier, Bullseye, racing in a Hot Wheels car, and enjoying snowball fights and ice fishing. In-store signage prompts shoppers to discover special codes throughout the store that unlock new characters and game levels. In certain stores, the interactive initiative extends to an immersive 3-D adventure; Google’s Project Tango tablets transform the aisles into a winter wonderland as the setting and characters change onscreen as the user moves.

Gap’s Play your Stripes augmented reality experience

Gap might be pushing four short videos directed by Sofia Coppola as the main portion of its campaign this holiday season, but it is also playing host online to a more innovative interactive experience. An augmented-reality gift guide lets online shoppers create music from the stripes they’re wearing. “Play your Stripes” lets users remix Blood Orange’s soundtrack “It Is What It Is” by transforming their own clothing into musical instruments.

Kate Spade’s shoppable video

Kate Spade arguably wins the crown for most amusing holiday film this season, with a short spot called “The Waiting Game” that features Anna Kendrick locked out of her apartment. With time to kill, the actress entertains herself by talking on the phone, singing familiar holiday tunes, and sipping champagne through a straw straight from the bottle. She also tries on various pieces she’s just bought from Kate Spade while posing for her small dog. Users see plenty of pieces from the collection, then can click to buy them thanks to a shoppable tie-in from touchscreen video platform Cinematique. Viewers can tap any product in the film to save it in a gallery on the righthand side of the screen. From there, they can click on any saved item to complete a purchase.

John Lewis’ Monty the Penguin tech integration

Department store John Lewis has melted hearts across the UK with its tale of a young boy called Sam and his pet penguin Monty, created by Adam & Eve/DDB. Accompanying the ad is a fully integrated initiative spanning relevant products for sale including books, plush penguin stuffed animals, penguin-patterned pyjamas and more, as well as an interactive experience in the store. John Lewis and Samsung created these spaces, dubbed “Monty’s Den.” Children can take their photos with the penguin, find out more about his Antarctic friends, check out virtual-reality goggles to see a 360-degree version of Monty’s world, and explore more of the campaign’s story. In the retailer’s London flagship store, a tech-enabled experience centres on bringing toys to life through Microsoft’s 3-D photogrammetry software. Children can scan their own toy, then see it appear onscreen dancing alongside Monty.

Ted Baker’s #SantasElfie Instagram game

Ted Baker has introduced an Instagram-based treasure hunt conceived by Poke London that invites customers to find missing elves. An account called @TedsElfie delivers a series of clues to followers via images curated to mimic a puzzle board. Combined, the squares depict a winter wonderland; divided, each square comprises its own picture with a caption that specifies whether or not the elves are nearby. Some lead to additional accounts in a sort of “choose your own adventure” experience. Visitors who locate the elves may win other prizes, from hip flasks and bracelets to a trip to see the Northern Lights.

Charlotte Olympia’s #spintowin slot machine

British footwear designer Charlotte Olympia has rolled out a festive slot machine on its website for the first 12 days of December. Fans are invited to spin to win iconic pieces from its seasonal collection – all they have to do it get three matching styles over the course of three tries. Charlotte Olympia has also pushed the game via social media; it shares a countdown bauble each day alongside the #spintowin hashtag.

Harvey Nichols’ “Could I Be Any Clearer” personalised gift cards app

Adam & Eve/DDB is also behind Harvey Nichols’ ‘Could I Be Any Clearer’ campaign, which comprises a line of gift cards designed to help shoppers ensure they get what they really want this season. The cards feature six traditional Christmas designs (robins, doves, wise men and more); each one features copy wishing the reader “Season’s Greetings” or “Good Tidings” before requesting specific presents. Consumers can create their own versions of the tongue-in-cheek cards online and use a dedicated Christmas-card app to customise digital cards for every product featured on the retailer’s website. Each can then be printed, emailed or shared via social media.

Tesco’s Secret Scan-ta

UK supermarket giant Tesco has introduced a service that browses Twitter to suggest what to buy for specific users. The Secret Scan-ta app created by We Are Social scrapes information from accounts in a bid to highlight users’ precise interests based on who they follow and what they post. The apps showcases suggestions ranging from technology to fashion alongside animated Santa GIFs; links to the website for Tesco’s loyalty card let members get double loyalty points as well as the chance to win bigger prizes.

Metail’s #tryonxmas

Virtual fitting room startup Metail is running a campaign that invites shoppers to see what they’d look like in a series of different Christmas-themed outfits. #Tryonxmas provides access to some of the best looks from high-street stores, as well as the likes of a Miss Santa, Christmas pudding and Minnie Mouse costume. Users enter their measurements to see how each look will work for them; when they’re satisfied, they can share the results with friends.

Bloomingdale’s goes all out interactive with 2014 holiday windows

US department store Bloomingdale’s has introduced a series of interactive windows tied to the theme of bows as part of its 2014 holiday campaign.

Gaming is the focus with passersby encouraged to connect to Bloomingdalesholiday.com via their mobile phones to participate in the action.

From there they can get involved in three different games directly in the windows. “Ready Set Bow,” reads the intro before offering up Memo-a-Bow, a card turning memory game; Whack-a-Bow, like a kind of Space Invaders; and Peek-a-Bow, where users have to keep their eye on the bow under the boxes as they move. Each can be played alone or with up to four players.

Photograph-a-bow is then the name for an experience powered by FaceCake that allows users to take a #selfie on an interactive touch screen to share with their social following. The resulting shots can be accessed via a Facebook app, where you can see and Adore-a-Bow the Incred-i-Bow attempts of others (seriously this one is never ending).

Shoppers are also encouraged to share their special holiday messages and ‘Put a Bow on It’ using the hashtag #bloomiesgreetings via Twitter – each tweet then appears across the New York skyline in yet another window.

Last but not least is Charit-a-Bow, a window featuring a giant teddy bear made by Gund covered in hundreds of gold bows and holding a screen that encourages viewers to donate to the Child Mind Institute.

Retail innovation firm The Science Project, which was responsible for the Saks Fifth Avenue Yeti window project last year, was behind the initiative.

Literal window shopping with Kate Spade Saturday’s digital, touchscreen storefronts

Kate Spade Saturday has taken up residence in New York with four pop-up digital stores appearing as window fronts around the city.

The “weekend brand” from Kate Spade, which opened its first store in Tokyo in March, offers 30 products from its range through an interactive touchscreen experience that’s available 24-hours a day. New items launch every Saturday following.

“This gives us the ability to produce more from our retail space,” Kate Spade CEO, William McComb, told Reuters. “My nickname for it is the Wall as a Mall.”

Standing in front of the window, shoppers can click to explore looks, opt to buy them via PayPal, and best of all have them delivered with an hour to wherever they are in the city thanks to a partnership with eBay. Security also isn’t a concern – despite being a giant screen, the initiative doesn’t ask for credit card information or your address for every other passerby to see, instead texting you with a link that leads you to your window shop bag on your own phone instead.

Forget Twitter: Puma campaign wants you to communicate via dance

Among today’s modes of online communication, we’re well-versed in the use of text, images and video. But what about dance?

In a campaign for its new Sync fragrances, Puma is proposing a new form of digital expression through movement rather than words. The sportswear brand has set up an interactive platform dubbed Dance Dictionary, where users can communicate with each other by encrypting specific sentences into physical dance moves. Its slogan: “Don’t say it, move it.”

Phrases like “Will you be my girlfriend?” or “Mondays make me want to scream” are translated into a series of choreographed gestures by 25 of the world’s better-known dancers, including Storyboard P, King Charles, PacMan, Ron Myles AKA Prime Tyme and Krumpers Big Mijo, Outrage and Worm, and LA choreographer Super Dave. Each word has a different move. Certain words in each sentence are interchangeable (try swapping ‘be’ for ‘retweet,’ and ‘girlfriend’ for ‘cat’ for amusement), resulting in 10,000 different combinations by Puma’s count.

While each piece can be shared via Twitter, Facebook or e-mail, the aim from Puma is something higher. “Choreographing a new language,” might sound like a lofty ambition — and certainly one that is unlikely to have mass application for you and me — but within its target 16 to 24-year-old demographic, it’s not unreasonable to imagine these moves being practiced in real life.

Beyond being a social tool, the Dance Dictionary is designed to be an inventory for any would-be freestyler to learn from. Words like “celebration” and “spaceship” are broken down into their own videos incorporating definitions and easy-to-follow demonstrations. A campaign that’s shareable both online and offline isn’t a bad aim, and that’s what makes it smart.

Anchoring the whole initiative is a music track called “First Time” from Dre Skull featuring Megan James and Popcaan. Its video, directed by Daniel Wolf, will also appear as a TV commercial in Europe. Grey London, the agency behind the initiative, is schooled at such a method — its 2011 Lucozade spot featuring “Louder” by DJ Fresh became what was then the highest pre-ordered download in global iTunes history, according to the agency.

The trick with both, says Grey London Executive Creative Director Nils Leonard, was bringing in genuine talent, whether that be the dancers, the music act or the film director. “Everyone involved with the Puma Dance Dictionary is from those worlds. They’re not in advertising; they’re famous in their own right. To make it credible that’s where we have to go, the audience can smell it out otherwise.”

Warby Parker runs Google Hangouts on site at Social Media Week

It might have been all about Topshop’s big partnership with Google during London Fashion Week, but at Social Media Week (SMW), it’s Warby Parker we’re talking about.

The eyewear brand, a long-time social media enthusiast, has set up an installation at SMW’s New York HQ that allows visitors to gain feedback on which frames to choose via a Google Hangout.

A shelf at the stand is filled with glasses, encouraging users to try on different options. Rather than just looking in the mirror, they can log in to a live session where various experts are waiting to share their professional thoughts on which ones to go for.

Those on hand throughout each day include celebrities, influencers, fashion experts and members of the Warby Parker and Google teams, according to a post on SMW’s blog.

Each Hangout is being screened on site, as well as live-streamed on Warby Parker’s G+ and YouTube pages. See a couple of examples from today below.
